Utah Valley University invites submission of innovative and well conceived proposals for development of Distance Education courses that extend access to education for new and diverse student populations.
To qualify for consideration, courses must have been previously approved by the Curriculum Committee. Through appropriate research and/or through a track record of on-campus enrollments, sufficient demand for the course must be demonstrated or reasonably projected.
Course consideration may also be affected by the current workload of Distance Education.
Except when grant monies and/or faculty release time is involved, Distance Education will typically cover all course development costs-no financial commitment is expected of schools or departments. However, because cost recovery to support other and future development depends on enrollments, departments must agree to run courses for a certain number of semesters without significant changes or revisions. Online courses run for 8 or more post-pilot semesters. If significant changes or revisions become necessary before post-pilot offerings are completed, the sponsoring school will compensate Distance Education for development costs.
Faculty who create a significant amount of new and original materials for a Distance Education course may qualify for a course development stipend. Stipend amounts are based on the quantity of new, original materials authored, and range from approximately $800 - $3700.
Distance Education courses that consist primarily of "e-Packs", online textbooks, or third-party-produced online content are not normally considered for development stipend. For more information, please refer to the Distance Education Online Course Authoring Agreement.
When a stipend is offered to subject matter experts (typically faculty) for authoring a course, it is based on a tiered scale tied to levels of instructional technology richness "ITR". This promotes quality courses with instructional rigor equal to or exceeding classroom learning. Courses may be developed on or off load according to Academic Department Policy. All courses are considered "work-for-hire" and are owned by UVU. (See UVU's Intellectual Property Policy for further clarification.) Curriculum decisions are made by the academic departments.
Be aware of the following dates relating to full course content submission. To facilitate a spring delivery, full content is to be submitted by October 1 of the previous year. To facilitate a summer delivery, full content is to be submitted by February 1. To facilitate a fall delivery, full content is to be submitted by April 1. Full core content generally consists of course introduction, syllabus, schedule, instructor bio, lessons, and assessments.
